General Description

The higher realm of cats whose intentions have always been "good." This is a subjective term, of course, and many cats spend their time pondering whether or not they will get into Starclan. Truly, it is hard to not achieve Starclan. All clan cats may pass on to their ancestral realm where they will always have peace and good hunting.

Starclan cats may wander all ancestral planes and can enter the Dark Forest territory. Once they enter the Dark Forest, however, they are able to be killed and their spirit destroyed by the Dark Forest Cats. Wolfstep stands guard at the passageway between the two realms and warn of the dangers they face.

As Guardians, they are also able to safely pass into the Dark Forest and are unable to be attacked, and cannot attack themselves. Only in the mortal realms can they be killed or harm Dark Forest members. Starclan are able to hurt one another, but it has seldom happened before. Many cats lead a life of peace following death.

Starclan cats can be forced into the Dark Forest by the Guardians. If they are not deemed worthy, then they will be chased out of Starclan and forbidden to enter again. As they are initially of Starclan, Guardians can hurt these cats and be hurt by them regardless of their physical location.

Unlike ghosts, Starclan does not have as much tie to the physical world as they do. They are able to communicate with all cats through the Moonstone, and often share advice and stories with the mortal cats. Apprentices who journey to the Moonstone for the first time are often greeted by past warriors who reassure their anxieties about becoming a warrior. Sometimes, Starclan may step foot in sacred grounds such as Fourtrees and commune with cats there, but this is a rare occurrence.

Outside of the holy realm, only leaders and medicine cats are able to speak with Starclan. They may speak with them at any sacred place as well as commune with them in dreams. If a medicine cat takes on a mate, then their connection to Starclan dwindles significantly and they may have trouble speaking with them outside of holy grounds. Leaders have a low connection to Starclan and often don't see them in dreams, but they may travel to the Moonstone whenever they need to.

As Starclan cannot walk in other cats' dreams, they must take possession of a medicine cat and speak through them. This often leaves the medicine cat weak and unconscious for hours after, and is an incredibly rare occurrence. Instead of possession, when possible, Starclan will send omens through mutilated prey, items relating to a warrior name (i.e. a buzzard feather overshadowed by a cloud is an omen that requires interpretation that relates to Buzzardcloud.) While omens are not often clear, Starclan will enter a dream to explain further and deliver prophecies in relation to it.

Special Ranks

Guardians

The Starclan Cats that sit at the pass between the Dark Forest and Starclan. These cats often volunteer for the services, and can be removed from their place at any time. Instead of their normal starry bodies, Guardians become great wild cats such as lynxes, sand cats, pallas cats, servals, ocelots, and jaguarundis. Leaders often become big cats such as lions, pumas, tigers, leopards, and so on. These cats connect most with the leaders of each clan, and are the ones to frequently offer advice and guidance. There is often only one or two Guardians, but it is not a strict limitation.

Seekers

The prophecy givers and possessors. Often only three of these cats bear this title, and are the ones who have the strongest connection to the mortal realm. They are dream walkers and can possess a medicine cat or leader to share a prophecy with many cats. They’re the ones who deliver prophecies and create omens to guide the cats. They are characterized by their silence in the next realm, and are unable to give lives. Often, these are medicine cats who have passed.

Warriors

The most common rank, these are simply cats who have passed away. They bear no special title or have limitations or powers. They hunt, play, share tongues, and live in the starry fields in peace. During an apprentice’s first visit to the moonstone, these are the cats who step forth and give comfort and advice. The Warrior Rank encompasses many cats, from the elderly to the youngest kit, even if they did not receive their warrior name.

Wanderers

These are the cats who did not belong to a clan, but have strong ties to it. They could be the parent, sibling, child, or close friend of a cla cat. Unlike StarClan, Wanderers may not remain in the starry fields forever but are allowed to frequently visit. They do not have stars in their fur, nor a star mark on their forehead.
